Nottingham City - Information
Nottingham in Wikipedia:
Nottingham (/ˈnɒtɪŋəm/) is a city in the ceremonial county of Nottinghamshire, England. Nottingham is a member of the English Core Cities Group.
Nottingham City has a population of 288,700. The Nottingham Urban Area has a population of 667,000, but much of this is in the surrounding boroughs, which are not really part of the City, and some of it spills over into the the neighbouring County of Derbyshire.
The urban area is the 7th largest urban area in the United Kingdom, ranking between Liverpool (6th) and Sheffield (8th).[2] The city proper population is notably smaller, this is because the city boundary is an historical one and is tightly drawn, therefore this boundary excludes many places which today are part of Nottingham. The Nottingham Urban Area does include these areas which are the large expanse of suburbs, along with nearby towns such as Ilkeston and Eastwood.
At the heart of Nottingham City Centre is the Old Market Square. This 22,000 sq/m open space is the largest square in England and was refurbished in 2007 to include a large water feature, which consists of numerous fountains and rapids.
The entire square was re-surfaced with granite slabs. [3] Nottingham Council House which overlooks the square can be seen for miles around thanks to its dome which rises 200 ft (61 m) above the city, and is lit up at night.[4] Inside the Council House is the Exchange Arcade, an upmarket shopping centre which houses many high class shops, shopping being one of the main features of the City.
Radiating out from the central square are the other areas of the city. The Hockley quarter, characterised by a high proportion of independent retailers and alternative cinema, is situated to the east of the city. Hockley is adjacent to the Lace Market area which is home to many large grand Victorian era buildings owing to Nottingham's importance in the Victorian Lace Industry, the city's interesting history being another main attraction.
To the south of the square shopping streets lead their way into the soon to be totally rebuilt Broadmarsh shopping centre. Beyond the shopping centre lies the canal which is a pleasant area full of cafes and restaurants.
To the west is Nottingham Castle and Maid Marian Way which is home to The Tales of Robin Hood along with the majority of the high rise office buildings in the city.
Northwards from market square are more major shopping streets which lead to the Victoria Shopping Centre and to an entertainment quarter with numerous restaurants and a cinema complex. The Theatre Royal, Nottingham on Theatre Square and Nottingham Playhouse at the Albert Hall can also be found here.

Nottingham University
The University of Nottingham has a long history of playing an active role in the local community and there are a number of different activities that take place across the University.
The Active Communities initiative was established in 2001 to encourage staff and students to become engaged in Nottingham's communities through volunteering. As individuals and groups, University volunteers have become involved in a wide range of activities. Local primary schools receive a great deal of support through the scheme, such as the John Clifford Primary School which, amongst other things, receives support for children whose first language is not English.
In nearby Lenton, the Crocus Café has been set up to provide a meeting place for students and local residents, providing Fair Trade food and drink. Active Communities has brought together students and Catering and Residential Services to develop the project.
One of the largest organisations within the Students' Union is Student Community Action. Through this group over 600 students a year volunteer in local schools and community organisations, as well as a wide range of other projects throughout Nottingham.
The University's relationships with local communities in Nottingham are assisted by the Off-Campus Students Manager who works with senior University managers to maintain a dialogue with residents' associations, Nottingham City Council, Broxtowe Borough Council, the police and other agencies. The Manager is the key University representative at meetings on and off campus where local concerns can be identified and positive relationships maintained between student and non-student residents in a community.
The University works closely with Nottingham City Council, Nottinghamshire County Council, the East Midlands Development Agency and organisations such as Nottingham Ambassadors and the CBI to promote the East Midlands region and encourage internal investment.
Local involvement with the arts is encouraged through the Lakeside Arts Centre. As well as being one of the region's most exciting arts centres, it is rapidly becoming recognised for the role it plays in education and the local community. A dedicated Drama Education Officer works with schools across the City and County and the centre has developed partnerships with local arts agencies and initiatives including Nottingham Playhouse, NOTT Dance and the NOW festival.
To encourage applicants from Nottingham's local community who have great potential but who might not otherwise consider university as an option, the Widening Participation Team's outreach programme offers a variety of activities. These range from summer schools, drama workshops and campus tours to coaching in study skills and interview techniques.
Over the last academic year the program ran over 250 activities for schools and colleges in which almost 10,000 young people proactively participated. Over 4,000 people participated in activities run through community groups or with mature and older learners
